Driving Directions

From Bruce Highway turn into Old Bruce Highway at waypoint and follow for approx 5km to Calliope River Rest Area – Southside. Road leading into the rest area is narrow bitumen but roads/tracks in the rest area itself are rough and unsealed. Not recommended in wet weather.

Google maps shows the bridge on Old Bruce Highway. Note the bridge has been closed to traffic for quite some time. So by road the South & North sides are some 8Km appart.

Calliope River Rest Area is a large free overnighter, with undulating surface and plenty of room for any size rig, on the bank of the Calliope River. This is one of the really good camps. Plenty of choice of camping spots. Just for 48 hours though.
This is the bush-camping south bank of the river. No facilities, and liable to severe flooding and erosion when river floods. The opposite bank (north side) is a beautifully manicured shady area with toilets, and is on the high side of the river bank.

Most of the area is on dirt or gravel and there is little grassed area. The South side has better access to the river for boats and fishing than north side, but north side is more popular and more grassed area.
