Driving Directions

On Canberra bound side, but accessible from both directions

Last updated by Ian on 18th November, 2013
Edmondson VC Rest Area is located on the Canberra bound side of the road and accessible from both directions the rest area is 100 metres off the highway next to Rowes Lagoon with some shade trees, picnic tables and a windy loo with wheelchair access.
There is enough room for large vehicles but can become difficult to turn long rigs when the area is busy. Although the site is mainly a sealed area there is a gravel section that will allow overnighters room to get away from the crowds when the rest area is busy.

Rowes Lagoon is three hectares containing pines, oaks, cypress, gums, poplars and willows and was established in 1957. Rowes Lagoon is an upland wetland sustained by local rainfall and groundwater. When flooded the lagoon supports an extensive area of reeds and sedges and is a valuable waterbird habitat and is one of the 10 major tributaries feeding Lake George.

The rest area is named after Corporal John Edmondson VC who was awarded the VC for bravery during WW2 at Tobruk. Corporal John Edmonds was born on 8 October 1914 at Wagga Wagga NSW. He served with the 2/17th Australian Infantry Battalion AIF in Tobruk, Libya with ‘conspicuous bravery’ saving the life of his officer and dieing the next day from his wounds.

He is buried in the Tobruk War Cemetery, Libya.
