Driving Directions

13km north of Kalbarri turn off, 115km south of Billabong Roadhouse on the eastern side of North West Coastal Highway.

The old highway bridge links the two sides, so from whichever direction you are approaching, look for the well-signed turn-off to the east side of the highway just as you descend towards the river. The new highway bridge crosses at a much higher level.

Galena Bridge Rest Area Murchison River is a large rest area with multiple sections suitable for large rigs with plenty of room to turn around. There are toilets and picnic facilities here and some shade.
This rest area is a Main Roads W.A. approved rest area, for 24hr camping only. The sealed part of this rest area is the access road and the River flood crossing (which is part of the old highway).

This original flood crossing is impassable if the Murchison River is in moderate flood. However, the new bridge on the N.W. Coastal Highway is virtually flood-proof to any level that the Murchison might reach, when it is in flood.

Most of this approved rest area would go under water when the Murchison River was in moderate flood, as the rest area is fairly low-lying.

The rest area is particularly well-used during the peak tourist season (May to October). The River does not usually flood during this period.

This site has now become extremely busy, no doubt as it is such a useful night's stop along Highway 1.

Camping was originally only on the south bank, but has now been expanded along the north side of the river, where there is now a toilet block. An additional block has been added on the far larger and flatter south side. Clearly the former one was not adequate for the demand!
The north side is quieter, but there is not a lot of level ground.

The Main Roads Western Australia website gives useful information (in a PDF file), as regards all the 24hr roadside rest areas in W.A, including this rest area. See website link on this page.

South side is the larger area and has been enlarged. Pleasant 24 hour stop, best along this stretch.

Toilets and dumps now on both sides of the river. South side has more room for big rigs and closer river access.
