The Gwydir River Camping Areas consist of several open grassy areas with good shade on the bank of the Gwydir River just outside Bingara. There are no facilities so you need to be self contained.
The area closest to town (the map pin) is accessed just before the water treatment facility and has a Boat Ramp sign The second one is just after the water treatment plant on Old Keera Road (Old Binda Road) and was once a gravel mining operation. It is an enormous place but can be rather desolate in long dry spells. There are some good fishing and swimming holes. Then there are at least 5 more sites along the Copeton Dam Road on the river prior to Allawah 4WD and Camping.

Very pleasant spot to spend a few days or a couple of weeks. The river is just a few metres away where you can fish and swim without being swept away.

Close inspection reveals that the surface consists of some river stone, deposited by prior flood events. This flags the possibility that it may not be the best choice of location after heavy rain, in case a large amount of water was to be released from the dam.

The track to one of the locations is steep. Caution is required during very wet periods and 4WD is preferable.

Bingara is an RV friendly town, with dump point and water. There are four doctors, a chemist, bakery, Bank and Post Office. There are also three garages and an ambulance station. The town supermarket is an IGA.

For those who like golf there is a golf course and you can relax afterwards at the local RSL club They love Nomads here.

Copeton Dam is 100 km round trip from campsite on Gwydir River, which makes an enjoyable trip to discover the surrounding countryside.
