Cross railway line on S side of Capricorn Highway at waypoint in Comet, diagonally opposite Corio Street.
The Leichhardt Dig Tree is of historical significance and this rest area provides an opportunity for visitors to learn its story.
Ludwig Leichhardt named the Comet River after observing a comet while in the area. He established a dig tree where he placed provisions and journals for others to find. The town was named after the river.
Comet is the oldest town in the area and has a population of only a couple of hundred people including the surrounding area.
