Driving Directions

Proceed to waypoint, 8km north-west of Boulia on Diamantina Developmental Road. Turn southwest onto Donohue Highway, (dirt road) and continue west for 119km through Amaroo towards Toko. Camp areas both sides of bridge at the western end of the waterhole. Part of Georgina River.

The Midgingar Waterhole is part of the Georgina River, one of the rivers of the Channel Country of far western Queensland. During the wet, the channels overflow and the river becomes an inland sea, many kilometres wide.
You can see from the attached screen shots of the map and the satellite view what a labyrinth of channels this river is. During drier times, the flow stops and the river is reduced to a series of waterholes, many of which dry up completely.

Others, like the Midgingar Waterhole persist throughout the dry season, except during droughts that span several years when many will completely disappear until the rains come again.
