Driving Directions

Turn off the Castlereagh Highway at waypoint, (the entrance to Lidsdale) and continue past Angus Place colliery. Follow the road for a further 24 kilometres through to the floor of the valley. There is about 20km of gravel road. When you reach the old Newnes Hotel, continue straight ahead to the campground.

The road down the escarpment is steep, winding and narrow in places. It is a good idea to use a low gear to avoid overheating the brakes, especially if your rig is heavy.

At the end of the Wolgan Valley lies a remnants of an oil shale industry. The former hotel is the only reminder of a once thriving community.
The township and oil shale mining complex was established in 1906. Operational costs and the availability of lower priced crude oil finally closed the works in 1932.

This area is now part of the Wollemi National Park. In an isolated valley with only a few residents, here is a place where you can get close to nature.
