During the 1950s it was popular for Brisbane families to pile into their FJ Holden and drive down to Southport to spend the weekend staying at a little beach hut and spending the days swimming and sunbaking. The idea caught on and soon the highway was packed with Holdens and Fords, Austins and Morris cars. A new era holiday era was born.

As the land was snapped up by eager holiday home builders, developers moved in and the high rise boom began. Now the Gold Coast is a metropolis of high rise apartments, casinos and resorts. The City exists for just one reason... having fun.

But there is more to the Gold Coast than the narrow strip of sand and surf. Beyond the high rise and the theme parks is a beautiful region up in the mountains, above the heat haze, which is the Gold Coast Hinterland. Here you can leave behind the crowds and the heat to enjoy the fresh mountain air of the World Heritage listed Tamborine National Park, the Lamington National Park or the Springbrook Plateau.

There are iconic guest houses such as Binna Burra Lodge and O'Reilly's Guesthouse. Bushwalking, bird watching and wine tasting are all popular pursuits in this area.
