The Nullarbor Plain is a large, flat and arid area of South Australia and Western Australia which is almost treeless. It was first crossed by explorer John Eyre in 1841. He had described it as "A blot on the face of nature and the sort of place one gets into in bad dreams".

Located along the edge of the Great Australian Bight, it was once part of a shallow sea bed and some areas consist mainly of limestone. In fact, it includes the world's largest single piece of limestone.
Driving across the Nullarbor is considered to be one of the great outback experiences and although the trip is all bitumen these days, it is still a remote and isolated place with hundreds of kilometres between fuel and food stops.
It is important to take special precautions when travelling the Nullarbor. In particular take plenty of drinking water, extra fuel and an extra spare tyre. Headwinds can increase fuel consumption on the long exposed highways of Australia and many have found that they have run out of fuel as a result. As one would expect, fuel prices are higher in remote areas such as this.
There are vast distances where there is no mobile phone signal so in the event of an emergency, the only form of help may be from passing motorists.
When camping on the Nullarbor, keep in mind that this area is exposed to southerly winds which have come off the Great Southern Ocean and it can get quite cold at night. But the scenery along the cliff tops of the Bight will leave you with memories that you will never forget.
