
Yorke Peninsula Camping


Yorke Peninsula in South Australia is surrounded by the pristine azure waters of St Vincent Gulf and Spencer Gulf, with over 700km of coastline. A rich agricultural region, it produces grain including barley and wheat as well as canola which is used to produce cooking oil. Sheep graze on the gentle rolling green hills. Gypsum and copper are mined on the peninsula.

The Bamboos Camping Area is tucked among the sand dunes between the road and the beach, 8.5km north of Balgowan. Camp sites can be found among the low scrub. There are no facilitie here.

The Gap Camping Area lies on the eastern shore of Spencer Gulf, 26km south of Moonta. There is little protection from the wind and no shade, but the fishing is good and it is a safe swimming beach.

At the tip of Yorke Peninsula is Innes National Park. Innes offers fantastic opportunities to enjoy camping, bushwalking, fishing and surfing. The park's mining and maritime history can be discovered by exploring the remnants of Inneston, once a booming gypsum-mining town. Scuba diving can be enjoyed among the shipwrecks that lay off the coast of the park. Overnight accommodation is available in the restored miners cottages in the historic Inneston village.
